Black Tie + Surrealism

The Menil Contemporaries are kicking off the holiday season with an oh-so-interesting-to-dress-for Surreal Soirée. Guests will revel in black-tie looks with a twist from the Surrealism Movement of the 1920s. I LIVE to dress up in costume, but I must avoid simply dressing up as an object or animal. Surrealism depicts scenes that are illogical and not possibly found in reality. A human dressed as a bird is yes, a costume, but put a clock on your head and now we are talkin' Surrealism.

One Surrealist work that sticks with me is by Meret Oppenheim, titled Luncheon in Fur, where a cup and saucer is made of animal fur. This juxtaposition of a domestic object with animality can be found throughout the Surrealism Movement. In a more modern piece by Rafal Oblinksi, a man is seen holding an umbrella, and the umbrella forms the full skirt of a woman's dress. There seem to be no limits with how wacky guests can get with their costumes!

In researching Salvador Dalí, the most famous Surrealist, I found out that he loved cats almost as much as I do. You can bet that I will incorporate this into my look somehow. If you are attending the event and need ideas from me, call me! If you haven't gotten a ticket yet, you can get one HERE! See you all there.
